Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) è nato a Paterson (New Jersey). Nel 1943 entra con una borsa di studio alla Columbia University, dove conosce un gruppo formato da Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, Lucien Carr e William Burroughs, più grande di una decina d’anni, che gli fa leggere Céline e Kafka. I suoi versi cominciano a circolare nel 1956 quando la casa editrice di Lawrence Ferlinghetti, la City Lights Books, pubblica Howl and Other Poems.
